Whenever possible, I generally try not to use the built in flash on my camera. I try to go somewhere where there is sufficient light (go outside), or I provide my own external sources (table lamps, floor lamps, studio lights).
Why?
The flash is generally very strong and blinding, which can bleed the color from your subject. It can also cause strong undesirable shadows behind your subject.

As far as the zoom feature...use it only when you are trying to capture something far away that you can't walk up to.Don't use it for upclose shots, just use the "flower" button if your camera has one to caption those High Def bare soles hehe.

I agree with that Wrinklesguy, good one. Especially pertaining to feet, why zoom from far away when you get right up on those suckers (unless you need to use the flash). Same goes for video, physically move the camera closer instead of using the zoom lens.
