Let me tell you about something that happened today at work...

Some of you may already know about my full-time place of employment, but for those of you who don't, I work security at a mental health facility. It's pretty much a gravy job, aside from an occasional smartass teenager who's court-ordered to go there for anger management.

We have this one guy who comes in up there who suffers sexual identity crisis, and he's usually decked out in women's clothes. Actually, older bingo playing women's clothes, nothing avante garde or attention getting, and this is a good thing for him. He's every bit as big and tall as me, and couldn't pass as a woman if he had a gun held to his head.

Well today, he happened to tell me that he's planning on surprising his counselor next week. I asked him how so, and he said he's going to wear a dress.

Now keep in mind that as my position as a security officer, one of my main tasks is to make sure nothing stirs the clients up. To give you a little background on this place, it's located in an inner city setting, with 90% of our clients being black people from all-black neighborhoods. The sexually confused dude is a big fat white guy from one of the shelters.

Now you tell me, in your opinion, will this or won't this stir up some angry black teenagers if they see some big dorky white man in a dress? I mentioned this to one of my bosses, and she almost jumped my ass because she's saying this guy has the right to feel comfortable, and "be himself". If he caught any shit, she told me, it would be my place to throw the sneering teenager or whoever else out.

Think about that for a second. I'm being instructed to molly-coddle some guy in his own little world, and possibly upset more people just so he can dress like a fruit. Wouldn't seeing something like this just as easily stir the other clients up? Isn't he stepping on their rights to a peaceful atmosphere by "being himself"?

Just switch out the scenario. What if this guy thought he was Adolph Hitler reincarnated, and to "be himself" he "had" to wear a swastika armband over his shirt sleeve. If this stirred the other clients up into saying something to him, I guarantee at that point he'd be considered a trouble maker. But just because he's a closet queen all of a sudden the cards shift and he's the misunderstood soul.

This has pissed me off everytime I've thought about it today. This, to me, smacks of forsaking the good of the many for the good of the one, and it's all because of his particular type of condition. I asked my boss today if he'd decide to wear a Klan hood in there instead, would it be my place to protect him then? She said no, that he'd be asking for trouble then. So, a grown man wearing a dress when it's not Halloween is perfectly normal all of a sudden?

I'll tell you this. That fruit can wear his dress, but I'll be damned if I'm going to shake a finger of shame in anybody's face for saying anything to him. The way I see it, he's only there one or two hours a week, that leaves all the rest of the week to dress however he wants. Why impose it on a place of business like that?

Sorry for ranting, I had to get it off my chest... [Cool]

Wow, such a complex issue that it took 9 months for a response! Hehe. You have an interesting one here. The balance of the individuals rights in balance with the betterment of the whole. Very complex indeed. Each situation is very specific and I am sure that in a different situation you may not feel that this mans crisis is such an issue. In this case it is. He has a right to be himself, but if it is known that the population around him will have issue with it, it is better to give the whole the benefit here. I guess the old adage "When in Rome..." has gone forgotten all to often. [Wink]

Thanks Neo. [Cool]

Thankfully, the one time he wore a dress in there was in the middle of the day before the teens got out of school, so nobody said anything. [Smile]

He's dressing like an older lady now, with the flowery sweat shirts and jogging pants and looks a helluva lot less conspicuous.

It's interesting though that he's going there to overcome his sexual identity crisis, and yet his therapist is the one encouraging him to "be himself". Doesn't this seem just a tad bit counter-productive? I mean, if he's gay, then be a gay man, don't be a gay man that dresses like a woman. He's not being who he is.

If I thought I was Lief Erickson, and was going to this place to overcome this identity crisis, the last thing I'd expect to be told is wear a viking helmet if it makes me feel comfortable. [Laugh]
