8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election
By EWEN CALLAWAY

Feb. 28, 2009—

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

Political Divide

Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.

That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.

After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.

The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.

Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Old-Fashioned Values

Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. However, expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, Edelman finds.

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage.

To get a better handle on other associations between social attitudes and pornography consumption, Edelman melded his data with a previous study on public attitudes toward religion.

States where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage," bought 3.6 more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. A similar difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behaviour."

"One natural hypothesis is something like repression: if you're told you can't have this, then you want it more," Edelman says.

[Big Grin] I think if we as Americans were less uptight about it, there would be no big deal.

Why does everything have to be a political arguement? Quit feeding the fire and causing division among people, like we need more left vs. right endfighting?.. for the sake of arguement however my roomates are Democrats and they like porn more than anyone I know that is a republican,so your argument is a moot point and has nothing to do with political affiliation and everything to do with personal choice. IF the study is correct though just proves one point, Religious and/or Republican credit card holders would rather get off on online porn and release their "tensions" in a non harmful way to anyone than to cheat on their spouses and break up marriages that cause a whole other host of problems which shows more moral fortitude than anything the left can offer to society. I quoted the article only. You should probably consider what obvious projection might do to the value of your comments in this forum.I personally would rather you ignore my posts altogether.

I get tired of reading all the trolling posts you and others flood over here, in fact I wish Wu would get rid of this section all together because it doesn't have anything to do with Feet and only causes people to get heated with each other. If I should be granted Mod Status..bwahaha look out [Big Grin]

I am fairly certain a very small percentage here will view this or any of my posts as trolling. This is a link to ABC news.It discusses online porn, which half of the site owners here produce, and political affiliation , which puts it right at home in this very forum. What you get tired of is viewpoints you don't particularly like, which is why i will again ask you to just leave my posts alone.I have read enough of your "insight" to know i don't need to read more.

My immediate take on this article was that it is likely that since most conservative locations tend to vocally fight adult novelty shops/adult dvd rental/adult live shows etc moving into the area, it is probably a no brainer that they pay for more online porn in these areas than areas that have access to all the above. The main reason i posted this is to see if others here who produce explicit adult material like i do have ever noticed a trend when it comes to the books.I have 4 years of data to look back on, and i can say that yes it seems the lack of immediate competition in these areas does seem to benefit the online host.

I am really surprised that anyone on Wu's would take offense to being associated with more online porn. Some producer's take thier art very seriously and have the backing of many vocal libertarian conservatives, who are socially liberal, ESPECIALLY when it comes to adult businesses moving into an area. That is what an open market is all about.

I am just not understanding how you think that more porn memberships that come from "conservative states" means that Religious and Republican viewers are the ones buying the memberships..that is totally in-conclusive. Democrats live in every state and amongst red state areas and are known for being a free and loose sexual group more than their counterparts so to speak {not sure, I am neither}. Not saying some aren't right wing conservatives buying porn memberships but the weight swings more in the left direction. There is a big difference between Religious Conservatives and just plain old Conservatives as well..the ones fighting to get rid of the Adult book stores would be your Catholics and Christians trying to clean up their neighborhoods.I actually get the most signups from liberal states like my own state, and east coast..so moot point like I said. You do live in Arizona..McCain's home state right?..toejobs from a red state! lol Conservatives get boners too u know. So what exactly is your point here [Laugh] [Laugh] [Wink]
Oh and uh..the 1st Ammendment still applies in my America...I will comment if I please when I see something I should speak up about. As long as no forum rules are broken it's all good. I'm just tired of the posts that try to pick fights with the other side, it's sometimes blatantly obviously with threads like these and it gets old. Relax, Bush is gone..keep reminding yourself that..no need to pick fights [Roll Eyes] [Thud]

YOu are still projecting. You do have the right to free speech but you do not have the right to attribute a viewpoint -first before i make one_ and second, after i have already stated mine and it had nothing to do with your projection.

watch closely

Nope.I sure never said that anywhere in this thread.I said i believe it has to do with the blocking of outlets where people in those areas can purchase it in person. It really is that simple.

You didn't like an argument the article may have made. That is fine. You do not get to attribute that argument to me because i posted the topic.that is a fallacy. You don't get to cry troll because it calls out conservative areas and then turn around and say

quote:
trying to clean up their neighborhoods
it is more like trying to control human nature.Which makes the topic worth discussing on a forum inhabited by producers of adult material. You are the only one trolling today, i'm afraid.

Over the last couple of decades, several research studies and surveys have revealed that those who identify themselves as conservatives tend to have a kinkier bent to their sexuality. That they might explore the wide world of web-porn, would seem to follow (keeping in mind that the bulk of resistance to taxing internet use comes from conservative legislators).

As a conservative, this doesn't surprise me in the least. The fundamental operative of conservatism is "Liberty" (from, among other things, governmental and politically-correct oppression and repression). Speaking strictly for myself, I enjoy a wonderful and varied sex-life and, clearly evidenced by my presence here, porn on the web is part of it.

There is no hypocrisy here. For too long, it has been the know-nothing liberals and pseudo-conservatives that have been defining what "conservatism" is and both groups are far off the mark. Certainly, there are conservatives who have issues with porn (I have a big problem with misogynistic porn, e.g. Max Hardcore) but the idea of regulating it is as offensive to me as the porn itself.

Having said all that, I guess I'd better mention the article quoted above. I'm doing the math in my head and might move a decimal point around: I think that a color chart of the U.S. based on the statistics needs only three shades. Cover the map of the country in gray, with the high usage rate in black and low usage rate in white.

I'm guessing (based on what I read) that the usage rate across the U.S.A. is fairly uniform (gray) with a couple of hot spots (pinpoints of black) and some spots (white) with slightly unusual low rates of web-porn use.

The black spots could could be the result of a kid with "Daddy's Credit Card" (possibly areas of affluence?) and the white areas could be the lack of availability (remote rural areas).

As a side-note, it has been my experience that the picket-waving protest-girl was, by far, the most up-tight...sex beyond missionary was barbaric.

I await the ridicule for my thoughts.
