Every post and thread at Wu's should have a thumbs up/thumbs down counter like you see over at Yahoo! Answers I feel incorportaing this could minimalize some of the negativity that occurs once in a blue moon on the threads - I saw a respone to one of the threads that wasn't so great and I wanted to give it a thumbs down - it would keep anonymity so no one would know who gave the thumbs up or thumbs down
Here is an example of a Yahoo! question that randomly generated upon visiting the site, to show an example of what I mean
Youtube does that too, with the comments section to the videos. I like that idea.

If you disagree with a comment, tell them and make your points of why you disagree. They then can either explain their views or others can comment on your complaint and/or whether they support it or not and why.... Things are better sorted in the light. The idea is just like a 'slap on the hand' and not knowing why you got it, or not see your shooter or who shot you and ask why he/she did that....
I think it's unnesessary and chickenly....
I will never forget a thread a few months ago where 'Tyler-D' posted pics of peds from a hooker which alot despised. Views of disagreement came from 'left-right & center' and Tyler had a chance and did defened himself. That's been the most exciting thread here instead of a boring number-count of thumbdowns... I respect him for that thread BTW

That idea could workout great. I think it would be a way for lurkers to quickly add a little more than what they already add to the overall picture. Could also be great for foot fetishists who want further anonymity from their beliefs.
Might even save some typing for regular participants too, so in the end perhaps threads here at wu's can boil down to a number count of thumbs like footlong subzero alluded, LOL! Now that would be funny as hell
In all probability though, it'd likely end up as an added means of social gauging for the intimidated person who feels like a lone knight about to walk out of the woods into a celtic battlefield (without having a good feel of how many fellow soldiers he has to come out of the woods behind him). That's all that the thumbcounts would mentally or verbally be used for -- to substantiate their court of public beliefs.

The idea has it's ups and downs, but I have to agree that it's a cowardly way of telling a person to their face that you don't care for their comments. Just work it out between yourselved instead of digitally giving them poor ratings.

My concern is the rampant anonymous trolling that will surely ensue.
It is employed on yahoo answers as a kind of wiki, where large numbers of readers can give weight to more useful answers. Same thing on Amazon reviews it's a way of cross checking the validity of a review.
The difference is this board isn't reviewing anything or seeking any facts. This is a social board. We already know there is an extremely wide variety of tastes around here. Imagine people anonymously disproving of your wife or girlfriend's pictures in the pic forum, no explanations.
BUT... in the website URL's forum where there's not much of a social scene this could probably be helpful. The nature of that room could maybe be enhanced by adding a reviewing system.

If not this idea, we should at least employ an anonymous view count on each thread and what I mean by that is a number will show up like 0000023 to show how many times a thread was opened up. This would make some of those people feel a bit better who have zero replies to their threads.

In the pictures section, if I find the feet unappealing, I just don't say anything; why ridicule something that is clearly beautiful to someone else. Well, there are those photos that I think are intended for their gross-out factor and I might volunteer a comment then.
Then, in the discussion areas, if I have a disagreement in opinion with someone, I will happily share my differences with them. On the other side of the coin, if someone has a bone to pick with me, I would rather they come out and say it so we can discuss the differences we have. Just simply seeing a thumb becomes a "nyeah-nyeah" making a thumb seem more like a "finger".
I'm not as savvy in matters of the web as most here but what ozkar has to say makes sense.

I agree with you ToeTapper. I don't see a need for negative criticism. Not everyone likes the same thing. So if you open a thread and it's not to your liking - it does't mean it's not to someone's liking and I think people should be supported and encouraged to participate. Negative comments can turn people away.
As for thumbs up or down? if it's something you feel strongly about - then comment and be open to why you agree or disagree. I would hate to see people just using the symbols...the conversation could be come stagnant...

After hearing everyone's opinions it's good to see both sides of this prospective issue....but I do firmly believe we need a counter in each thread to show how many times it's viewed as it will also give anonymous attention toward the lurkers. I think we would be amazed at how many times the threads are viewed.
And to clarify, if I need to, I never had any desire to have the thumbs up/down thing in the foot pictures seection but in every other portion of the forum.

A counter for a thread to see how many times it's viewed (even if a comment isn't left on it) could be interesting. You do always read occasional comments where someone says - I go back and look again and again but I don't always comment! Then again, for those that are posting - it's really the comments that we like to see -- so do we care if someone looks and has nothing to say?
