I figured I could get one of you guys to quickly translate a little slang for me. On another forum I check which has absolutely nothing to do with feet the majority of the posters are English. Some of the words that get thrown around in response to some news articles dealing with ruffians refer to them as:
"chavs"
"yobs"
Someone over there wanna help me with this. I'm interested in the U.K. to U.S. translation of a lot of local slang.

I had heard the term "Yob" before and, from the context, gathered that it was at best unflattering and probably less charitable than that.
If memory (and etiquette) serve me, Her Majesty's subjects much prefer to be called "British" rather than "English"; much time has passed and I could be wrong about this.

Well from what I can tell on that forum English guys don't want to be lumped in the the Welsh, or Scots by being referred to as "British." Funny isn't it?
The "chavs" look like a bunch of wannabe Eminems from the look of that pic. Here I've heard the term "Wigger." White guys trying to act black.

Yobbo or yob is a slang term for an uncouth or thuggish blue collar person. The word derives from a back slang reading of the word "boy" (boy or boyo reversed becomes yob or — slightly modified — yobbo).

I thought the chav thing had faded now, while they definately exist and there are loads around London I haven't noticed the term being used in the newspapers as much as it used to be lol. I remember at one point the media here were referrin to Britney Spears as a chav, especially when she (allegedly) wore a pink tracksuit to her wedding lol.
If you're ever in England and you see someone wearing a Burberry cap and Tracksuit bottoms (sweat pants) = chav

Jesus Christ! That is one news article I remember reading. Sorry about your friend and the girl. Bunch of guys beating up on a girl is something I just can't comprehend. I'm guessing that youths probably got a "harsh" 7 year sentence for her murder. Is that close?
