I'm wondering, as me and Lou have talked about this to a great extent, if videogames are going to die as a primary source of media in a few years. Videogames once had a lot of diversity (Pac man played nothing like Contra, Galaxian played nothing like Mario, Excitebike was no Metroid, and Zelda was surely not Ninja Gaiden). Now it's Halo and clones, Grand Theft Auto and clones, and Morrowind and clones. What saddens me the most is how much I love videogames, and yet how there are no games out there I want to purchase. So there it stands, I've been following these "next generation" systems. Waiting for Nintendo to unveil fully it's system, but X-Box and PS3 seem to be doing the same ole same ole. New Final Fantasy/Metal Gear/Devil May Cry/etc etc. So...here's the question. When will these series get old, and when will these companies need to create new ideas? The market is now flooded with casual gamers, people who like Halo and Grand Theft Auto. Not us...the ones who struggled to earn the Teneki suit in Super Mario 3. The ones who know what (Down, R, Up, L, Y, B) did in Street Fighter. Gaming is officially going to hell...and I wonder if it will just sit there as another mindless media product, or re emerge as a creative field it used to be. My .02.

I remember seeing something in Yahoo news a couple weeks back about the video game industry climbing so many points or something like that compared to last year's sales, so it's really kind of hard to make a prediction when we're seeing a whole bunch of drek flood the market but the sales are still either stable or climbing.
I've heard that Nintendo is wanting to get gaming back to it's basics with their new system. From what I understand, the president of Nintendo (sorry, I forgot his name) is wanting the company to lean toward making games that "don't require the player to read the instruction book first". As always Nintendo shows that they are a "dedicated gamers first" kind of company, in my opinion. Major hats off to them once again.
I personally can't see this huge gaming tide going on for a whole lot longer though, as far as the corporations are concerned. Like anything, it's gotta bottom-out one day either sooner or later, and then where are all the casual gamers gonna go? We'll still have companies like Nintendo, Sega, Treasure, Konami, Capcom, Namco, and others that focus on the hardcore gamers, still doing their thing because their audiences are established. These me-too companies that crank out clones for the quick bucks will either have to adapt to survive, or perish. Either way, us hardcore gamers win in the end.

During my last year of college we had to do a strategy study of Nintendo, most notably the years that they produced their Famicom (NES here in America) through their Super NES. The case study gave a brief outline of the gaming industry in its early beginnings, and mention was made that Pong had like a couple hundred knock-offs made by other companies to imitate it.
Other than that it just seems that the next generation has different tastes. Maybe it's a simple matter of dimension; people seem to like 3-D shooters where the camera swings around behind the character as in Ratchet and Clank. The fighting games I used to like, such as Double Dragon and Rygar, and the "bird's eye view" games like 1942 and Heavy Barrell have been shoved into 2-dimensional old news.

I never really got into sports games, but I did love playing Blades of Steel on NES. I spent most of the game trying to get the guys to fight.

I do miss the simplicity video games use to have prior to cdrom, and I miss "arcade" gaming, wich is now pretty much just shooters and virtual fighter type games.I miss being able to play games n still socialise with people @ the same time.nowadays games are soo indeph that you have to focus @ all times. I would be lieing if I sat here and said I don't enjoy the games of today, the splinter cells, the wwe games, fps, and gta are amazing, but they are causeing all games that are coming out to resemble them(batman begins is like splinter cell, darkwatch wich is good, but like halo/doom,etc) .I hope nintendo comes through with their new system

To anybody here longing for those days of more simplistic yet addicting game-play to their games, I highly recommend Katamari Damaci for the PS2. You can get it new for $20, and if you have the system it would be crime not to add such a great game to your collection!

if you want good old school games go to the oberon website...they got tons of good stuff.
the gaming industry will never die. as long as there is life there will be a market for games that simulate facets of it. as long as people can fantasize there will be games that allow people to live them out.
that being said...as long as i can get my mmo fix im happy. right now i play world of warcraft. next year ill be playing lord of the rings online or dungeons and dragons online.

i really miss old classic RPGs. It seems like i find myself playing old nintendo, SNES, and PS1 RPGs more than anything new. and it gets sad when i buy a newer RPG and it just doesnt have the same magic that the older ones seemed to have. i find myself replaying my favorites even though i know then in and out already. =(

I will always be a fan of videogames. Unfortunately people lower their standards (including the companies themselves *excluding nintendo*)
My respect for Nintendo's individuality is something that cant have words used to desribe its natural roots. They have been a single unit creating breakthrough technology.
I LOVE and I MEAN LOVE!!! RPGS! Anything that Square makes I'll play!

this one is going out to mistique-- i understand how you can like nintendo for staying original, but i am worried that the revolution will bomb. its just too"revolutionary". they probably will screw up the online play again, and have you seen the wierd new controller? nintendo revolution controller 2. i cant see who anyone but an avid gamer can get into this new controller. nintendo must be on that

Im so happy with that controller design, its not even funny. It's something WAY out of left field. Sensors? Hand movements? Only Nintendo. Never on the traditional. Microsoft changes their controller design by almost nothing. Can you imagine first person shooters on this thing? Your hand is a freaking gun. God I hope this thing goes well...

I also love old RPGs. Ultima, Might and Magic, Wizardry. Those games were great. I love the freedom of exploration and medieval fantasy setting. These used to be the definition of RPGs.
It seems the term RPG has been watered down these days however. Nowadays almost every "RPG" is either a "japanese RPG" wich hardly ever stress freedom, exploration and medieval fantasy themes, or a dumbed down "actaion-adventure RPG".
I don't think the gaming industry will die down though. The increasing popularity will most likely cause companies to create games that "appeal to the masses"; i.e. bland, unorigional. But I think that video games are here to stay. It's kind of like when movies with sound were new. The silent motion picure actors criticized the new "talkies" as being a fad.

I'm still waiting for a racing game that has about 40 DIFFERENT tracks,All looking different from each other, from places all around the world ex.ejypt, lake tahoe, utah dessert,a few cities, london, the grand canyon, redwood forest, sanfrancisco. And have it so you can go through all of them earning money to buy better engines, gear boxes, tires and other car upgrades as the races get harder.Unstead of making a super game with 40+ races, all there is,is games with only 8-10 races and they come out with part 2,3,4,5 every year with only 8-10 races. It's all about $$$$
