if youre on a PC, download the k-lite codec pack (full or mega), that should give you a few extra codecs to try

I use Hypercam http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/ , it has a free and pay version. The free version lets you record anything in your monitor screen including sound and you can alter the size of the recording window. A few draw backs are the fact that your video will say "Hypercam" in the corner of the vid, plus the video sizes can be quite large but you can adjust all of this in the settings before recording
